OMV Petrom , the largest energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, has started construction of a sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ) and renewable diesel ( HVO ) production unit at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania. With an investment of 750 million euros, this facility seeks to boost the energy transition in the region.

OMV and its production of sustainable aviation fuel

The new plant will have a capacity of 250,000 tons of sustainable fuel per year, allowing the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the region and also encouraging the implementation of better energy technologies.

SAF and HVO are produced from used vegetable oils and animal fats, using advanced processes with green hydrogen. These fuels are essential to decarbonise sectors such as aviation, where electrification is limited.

The refinery’s existing infrastructure will be adapted to store and distribute these new sustainable fuels , ensuring an efficient transition towards greener mobility.

The investment of 560 million euros will be allocated to the construction of the SAF/HVO unit , while 190 million euros will be directed towards the installation of two green hydrogen plants.

Sustainable fuels are essential to decarbonise transport, especially in sectors where electrification is difficult to implement, such as aviation.

Between 2022 and 2030, we will allocate 35% of our investment budget to projects that support the energy transition, in Romania and the region.

Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom.

With the start of this highly complex project, employing new and innovative technologies, we are proud to lead the way with the first installation of its kind in our operating region.

This achievement is possible thanks to our highly qualified colleagues, whose experience and dedication are crucial to our success.

Radu Căprău, member of the Executive Committee of OMV Petrom responsible for Refining and Marketing .

In addition to the Petrobrazi project , OMV is expanding its network of electric vehicle charging stations, aiming to exceed 5,000 units in Romania by 2030.
