OMV Petrom and ROMGAZ begin drilling the first well at the Neptun Deep project.

Once fully operational, the project will provide approximately 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.
proyecto Neptun Deep

OMV Petrom, Eastern Europe’s largest energy producer, together with ROMGAZ, Romania’s leading natural gas supplier, have begun drilling the first natural gas production well in the Neptun Deep block . This project, located 160 km off the Black Sea coast, is considered one of Romania’s most important projects in terms of energy security.

The drilling of this first well, which is being carried out in the Pelican South field, kicks off a series of ten wells, which will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026. The first gas deliveries are expected in 2027, with a production projection of 8 bcm per year once peak production is reached.

The importance of the Neptun Deep project

The Neptun Deep project will be key to reducing Romania’s dependence on natural gas imports. Furthermore, the environmental impact of drilling has been minimized thanks to the use of Neodrill’s CAN-ductor technology , which enables cleaner and more efficient drilling.

The infrastructure for this megaproject includes offshore platforms , subsea production systems, and a gas pipeline to transport gas to shore. Production will be operated remotely through a digital twin, ensuring safe and efficient operations throughout the entire process.

It’s important to note that OMV Petrom and ROMGAZ are investing up to €4 billion in this project, which will strengthen the Romanian economy and position the country as a key player in the European energy market.
