CNOOC Limited has made a significant discovery in the South China Sea, revealing a massive oil field in the Huizhou 19-6 area. This field, with proven reserves exceeding 100 million tons of oil equivalent , is located in an undisputed area within China’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The average water depth in this area is approximately 100 meters, which represents a considerable challenge for current drilling technologies.

Challenges in oilfield drilling

Drilling in this region has faced numerous challenges due to the high temperatures and pressures that characterize the deep and ultra-deep layers. However, CNOOC’s success with the Huizhou 19-6 field underscores its ability to tap into highly complex oil reserves. With daily production of 413 barrels of oil and 2.41 million cubic feet of natural gas , this discovery reinforces CNOOC’s role as a leader in offshore exploration .

The Huizhou 19-6 deposit represents a significant technological breakthrough for CNOOC, as it is the first integrated deep-sea clastic field in China. Despite the geological challenges associated with these resources, the company has made significant progress in exploring these complex geological systems.

Mr. Zhou Xinhuai, the company’s executive director, said:

CNOOC Limited has made significant progress in oil and gas exploration in the eastern South China Sea. Oil fields containing hundreds of millions of tons of oil have been discovered in this area for two consecutive years, making it a new driver of growth in offshore oil and gas production.
