Ofgem sets new electricity and gas tariffs

Energy regulation in the United Kingdom marks a turning point for the second quarter of 2026.

The decision by Ofgem to reduce domestic electricity and gas tariffs by 7% is not a simple market fluctuation, but the result of a profound restructuring in the funding of social programs and a drop in wholesale prices. Starting in April, an average household will see financial relief with savings amounting to up to £117 annually.

Under the new regulations, the estimated annual expenditure for families with gas contracts and electricity will be £1,641. It is crucial to understand that this adjustment responds to the elimination of environmental charges from direct bills, transferring them to general taxation.

Likewise, the £38 reduction in wholesale acquisition costs has offset the increase in network investments necessary for system modernization under the RIIO-3 framework.

Major suppliers such as British Gas, Octopus, EDF, and E.ON have confirmed their participation in a reduced fixed-tariff scheme aimed at benefiting consumers with lower demand.

Users who pay by direct debit will now pay 24.67 pence per kWh for electricity and 5.74 pence for gas. This scenario allows for greater flexibility and competition in a market seeking to stabilize after years of extreme volatility.
