Finnish company Norsepower , a specialist in wind propulsion systems, has established a strategic alliance with Syroco to maximize energy efficiency in maritime transport. This collaboration seeks to integrate Rotor Sails technology with advanced digital systems, allowing commercial vessels to reduce fuel consumption.
Efficient navigation with technology from Norsepower and Syroco
The integration of wind propulsion with Syroco’s digital solutions has proven its effectiveness on board the tanker Alcyone , operated by Socatra . Through the use of a digital twin, Syroco has managed to simulate in real time the behaviour of the ship, considering factors such as wind resistance, ocean currents and hull configuration.
Tests carried out with Syroco technology have validated the positive impact of Norsepower Rotor Sails , achieving a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 21% per voyage. In addition, integration with AI-based navigation tools has enabled efficiency to be doubled on certain routes, offering shipowners a tangible and measurable solution for the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
Artificial intelligence and wind propulsion
Syroco ’s approach consists of collecting meteorological and marine data, combining it with information from onboard sensors to generate predictive navigation models. This system allows the contribution of wind propulsion to the vessel’s efficiency to be assessed in real time, ensuring an optimal balance between the use of wind and other operational factors.
By integrating Norsepower Rotor Sails with digital twin models, the Syroco platform helps the crew to obtain the most optimized route at any given time and, in essence, amplifies the effect of wind assistance. This collaboration shows the great potential of combining innovative technologies to meet the decarbonization goals of the maritime industry.
