Norden and Microsoft team up to decarbonize the maritime supply chain

Microsoft will offset nearly 10,000 tons of CO2e over three years through certified marine biofuel.

The Danish shipping company Norden has initiated a pilot project together with Microsoft with the aim of mitigating maritime emissions. The program is based on the use of certified biofuels and a The program is based on the use of certified biofuels and a credit transfer system using the Book and Claim model, a tool that allows companies such as Microsoft to reduce their environmental footprint without having to modify routes or fleets.

In this system, Norden uses biofuels on certain routes and transfers the emission reductions to Microsoft through registered certificates. This ensures that the attributed emission reductions are transparent and verifiable. According to data provided, the initiative will will avoid around 10,000 tons of CO2e in three years. in three years.

How the “Book and Claim” approach works

The initiative is aligned with the Smart Freight Centre framework and is independently audited. In addition, it is implemented in collaboration with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), which provides a reliable infrastructure to validate transactions and avoid double counting. This backing reinforces the credibility of the mechanism and promotes the growth of sustainable marine fuels.

Microsoft continues its sustainability strategy through partnerships that enable an effective reduction of Scope 3 emissions, those indirect emissions generated in its value chain. In the words of Anne Jensen, Norden’s chief operating officer, the agreement reflects the immediate potential for any company seeking to reduce its impact without waiting for future solutions.

Transparency in maritime emissions and certified traceability

The biofuel used by Norden is made from waste and is internationally certified. In recent tests, it has been shown to reduce emissions by 80% to 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels, making it a realistic option given the limited geographical availability of such solutions.

Although this pilot focuses on Microsoft, the Book and Claim model is designed to scale and be adopted by other companies with international operations. It is designed to mitigate emissions without direct reliance on specific routes or ships, which facilitates adoption in sectors with complex supply chains.
