The shipping company CMA CGM has entered into a partnership with sports industry giant Nike. Nike with the aim of adopting the use of sustainable biofuels in its shipping operations.

This agreement, which will be in force from July 1, 2024 until May 31, 2025 and will allow Nike to use biofuels to transport 36% of its cargo through CMA CGM, with the expectation of reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tons. This move is seen by both sides as a crucial step towards greener logistics.

Olivier Nivoix, executive vice president of CMA CGM, highlighted the importance of this partnership with Nike, considering it a significant step in the effort to decarbonize the shipping industry. Nivoix expressed the hope that this success will encourage others to join the initiative, thus accelerating the transition to a carbon-free industry. carbon-free industry. .

Alliance for the use of biofuels

This project is part of the shipping company’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, while simultaneously supporting its customers in reducing the carbon footprint of their supply chains. In line with this commitment, CMA CGM has pursued strategic partnerships, such as the recent collaboration with Masdar, a clean energy company in Abu Dhabi, to secure the long-term supply of environmentally friendly marine fuels.

As part of its vision of net zero emissions by 2050, CMA CGM has set ambitious targets, including a 30% reduction in total emissions by 2030 (compared to 2008) and an 80% decrease by 2040. The company is accelerating its energy transition through the integration of low-carbon fuels and the addition of a new generation of dual-fuel vessels, prepared to use biofuels and methane- and methanol-based e-fuels. The shipping company currently has 35 of these vessels in its fleet and has 84 more on order.

The alliance between the two companies for the use of sustainable biofuels in shipping is a testament to both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation. This joint effort not only contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but also sets a model for other corporations to follow in the search for environmentally friendly solutions in global logistics.
