Installation of the twelfth and final wind turbine at South Fork Wind, New York’s first offshore wind farm, has been completed.

A few days ago, South Fork Wind, a joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource Energy, announced via social media that the last wind turbine had set sail for the project site from the State Pier Terminal in New London, Connecticut.

According to social media posts by Ørsted’s team on February 21, the last wind turbine was installed on February 20.

The 132 MW South Fork Wind farm, located about 35 miles east of Montauk Point, consists of 12 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines installed on monopile foundations.

All of the project’s monopile foundations and offshore substation were installed in the summer of 2023, and wind turbine components began arriving in New London in the same period.

Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus installed the first turbine in late November 2023 and shortly thereafter, in early December 2023, the offshore wind farm delivered its first power to the grid.

South Fork Wind: New York’s first offshore wind farm

With a generating capacity of 132 MW, South Fork Wind can power approximately 70,000 homes on Long Island and eliminate up to six million tons of carbon emissions. carbon emissions emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road, according to its developers.

Currently owned by Ørsted and Eversource, the offshore wind farm will soon undergo a change in ownership, as Eversource Energy is in the process of selling its 50% stake in the South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind projects to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), but will maintain its previously announced tax equity investment in South Fork Wind. The transaction is expected to close in mid-2024.

The completion of South Fork Wind not only represents an important milestone for New York State in its transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources, but also sets a precedent for future renewable energy projects in the region.

This project underscores New York’s commitment to innovation in offshore wind energy and its role in the fight against climate change, while driving local economic development and job creation in the renewable energy sector.
