The F-110 frigate program continues to take shape at Navantia’s shipyard in Ferrol. This Friday was a key day with the start of the construction of the frigate F113 “Menéndez de Avilés” and the keel laying of the F112 “Roger de Lauria”.
In a ceremony presided over by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, two achievements were celebrated that mark progress in the modernization of the Spanish Navy. The steel cutting work on the F113 began three months ahead of schedule, inside a robotized welding cell that is part of the new industrial digitalization processes.
A historic industrial boost in the Ferrol estuary
Currently, three frigates are under construction at the Ferrol and Fene shipyards, generating an activity that employs more than 5,000 people every day, figures that have not been recorded for more than a decade.
The president of Navantia, Ricardo Domínguez, highlighted the dedication of the workforce and the auxiliary industry, which has allowed advances such as the following the simultaneous construction of several units and the transformation of the shipyard by means of automation technologieszation technologies.
The new Digital Block Factory goes into action
The first block of the F113 has been assembled in the new Digital Block Factory, where the incorporation of artificial vision and robotic welding systems aims to reduce construction times and increase the quality of the vessels.
For its part, the F112 “Roger de Lauria” is progressing in slipway 3, having placed block 212 of the 33 that will make it up. Meanwhile, the F111 “Ramon de Bonifaz” is more than 85% complete and is about to be launched in the coming months.

F-110 program and fleet renewal schedule
The F-110 program calls for the delivery of five frigates between 2026 and 2029, with missions focused on anti-surface, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare. These units will progressively replace the Santa María frigates, commissioned between 1986 and 1995.
This boost not only ensures advanced operational capabilities for the Spanish Navy, but also consolidates Navantia’s position as a benchmark in shipbuilding shipbuilding.
