The energy company Naturgy has started the comprehensive modernization of the Somozas wind farm in A Coruña, where 81 old wind turbines will be replaced by 9 turbines of the latest technology. This initiative, financed with 67 million euros through the European NextGenerationEU program, is part of the company’s repowering strategy.
By taking advantage of existing infrastructures, such as evacuation and buildings, the project optimizes resources and improves the park’s environmental integration. Despite a slight reduction in installed capacity, from 49.6 MW to 46.4 MW, annual production will increase to 168 GWh, enough to supply some 48,000 homes.
The decommissioning process at Somozas wind farm
The dismantling process is designed to maximize the reuse of materials. Of the more than 10.5 million kilograms that will be managed, 75% corresponds to steel, 17% to cement and aggregates, and the rest to components such as copperaluminum and fiberglass. Only a small fraction will require special treatment.
The electrical substation will also be upgraded to accompany the new technical configuration and ecological restoration will be carried out in the disaffected areas, improving visual harmony with the natural surroundings.
This plan is in addition to two other similar Naturgy initiatives in Galicia: Monte Redondo (Vimianzo)which will replace 66 turbines with 11 modern ones, and the Novo wind farm (Valdoviño, San Sadurniño and Narón), which will go from 25 to only 5 wind turbines.which will go from 25 to only 5 wind turbines. Both will contribute to a more efficient and sustainable electricity system.
Wind repowering, a key part of Naturgy’s energy transition strategy, not only improves the technical performance of existing wind farms, but also boosts local employment and significantly reduces the environmental impact. The work at Somozas is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026.
