The Muir Mhòr offshore wind farm development, one of the first commercial-scale projects of its kind in the world, has just passed the stage of obtaining planning consent for its onshore infrastructure.

Muir Mhòr offshore wind farm receives approval

Aberdeenshire Council approved the application submitted by the developers of the project, a partnership between Fred. Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall, to connect the park to the national grid through subway cabling and a substation. This decision was made by the Infrastructure Services Committee after a public consultation process with local communities and stakeholders.

Muir Mhòr, whose name translates as “great sea” in Gaelic, is the first floating wind farm in the ScotWind program to receive onshore planning approval. This authorization lays the groundwork for the future deployment of its offshore facility, currently under review by the Scottish Government.

When operational, the Muir Mhòr farm is expected to generate up to 1 gigawatt of clean energy, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 1.2 million homes. This contribution will improve the UK’s energy security and strengthen its commitment to the transition to renewable energy.

In addition, the consultation phase included events in locations such as Peterhead and Longside, where the project teams collected citizen suggestions, which were then integrated into the final application.

If it obtains final consent for its offshore installation, Muir Mhòr will be a benchmark for future floating farms globally. The collaboration between Fred. Olsen Seawind y Vattenfall aims to consolidate Scotland as a world leader in floating offshore wind energy and make a decisive contribution to its net zero emissions targets.

The park will be located some 63 kilometers off the coast of Peterhead, in North Sea waters, with a land-based infrastructure that now has the necessary institutional backing to move to the next stage.
