The Welsh Government has strengthened its commitment to renewable energy following an £8m investment in the Morlais project , the largest approved tidal energy development in Europe, led by social enterprise Menter Môn , as a champion for better energy management.
The Morlais project and tidal energy
The project is based in Anglesey , where the project will offer a plug and play model for developers of tidal power technology , facilitating the reduction of operating costs and promoting the adoption of this clean energy source. The investment will finance the Cydnerth phase , which will strengthen the connection to the electricity grid at Parc Cybi, Holyhead , optimising the distribution of the electricity generated to the country’s cities.
This funding demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to renewable energy and the important role that tidal energy can play in our energy future. By supporting projects like Morlais, we are not only unlocking the potential of our natural resources, but we are also laying the foundations for a resilient and green economy in North Wales.
John Idris Jones, president of Menter Môn Morlais.
The Morlais project represents a major opportunity to position Wales at the forefront of ocean energy in Europe. By consolidating an innovation ecosystem in tidal energy, it is expected to attract a high volume of investors, generate jobs and promote multiple clean technologies.
We welcome the Minister’s announcement, which strengthens our ability to generate clean energy and local employment through the Morlais project. This funding supports our vision to position North Wales as a leader in tidal energy innovation, creating opportunities for growth and collaboration across the region.
Dafydd Gruffydd, CEO of Menter Môn Morlais.
