A 1970s residential building in the heart of Edmonton, Canada, has been transformed into a global icon of sustainable architecture thanks to the vision of Mitrex. The Canadian company has just set a new Guinness Guinness World Record with the world’s largest building-integrated solar panel (BIPV) mural.

Art, solar energy and cultural diversity

The facade of the SunRise Residential has been converted into a 265 kW solar generator, spread over more than 2780 m². What makes this installation unique is not only its scale, but its artistic dimension. The mural was designed by Lance Cardinal, an artist of Cree heritage, who fused indigenous and Chinese cultural motifs to reflect the diversity of the local community.

The BIPV system system allows the building to generate clean energy which supplies its common areas, avoiding the emission of 150 tons of CO₂ per year. This transformation, in addition to optimizing energy consumption, also brings financial savings for owners and tenants.

An accessible and functional solar panel mural

One of the keys to the project has been the ease of integration of the solar system. solar system. Mitrex, together with Avenue Living, MBC Group and Chandos Construction, managed to implement the panels without disrupting standard construction flows. This approach demonstrates that BIPV technology can be scaled without complexity and with tangible benefits.

The eFacade eFacade PRO Plussystem, produced in Ontario, generates energy and beautifies the city. Each panel can be visually customized, allowing old structures to be transformed into aesthetic and sustainable assets.

The conversion of the SunRise Residential is a concrete demonstration of BIPV’s potential to drive urban decarbonization. urban decarbonization. With this initiative, the company positions its technology as a viable and replicable solution for architects and developers seeking performance, design and environmental responsibility.
