The state-owned company Hunosa is making progress in its commitment to energy conversion with the definitive award of the La Pereda fair transition node, granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge(MITECO). This concession guarantees access rights to the electricity grid for the future biomass power plant, with an installed capacity of 50 megawatts(MW).

The process, led by the Institute for Just Transition(ITJ), evaluated environmental aspects and social benefits. Among them, the commitment to job creation and the promotion of training in municipalities such as Mieres, Aller, Lena and Teverga were highlighted.

The plant is scheduled to come into operation in 2027. The works include the dismantling of old systems linked to fuels, giving way to an infrastructure adapted to the valorization of biomass, with an investment of over 55 million euros.

Hunosa, which seeks to guarantee a constant supply of biomass, is negotiating agreements with regional and national suppliers. This strengthens the energy value chain in Asturias and consolidates its role on the Spanish renewable energy map.

The awarding of the La Pereda contract is part of a series of projects that Hunosa is promoting after its exit from coal. In Langreo, for example, the plan for a hydrogen plant in hydrogen plant, while the expansion of the The company continues to expand its geothermal heat network, which is already operating in hybrid mode with biomass.

In addition, Hunosa’s integration into the National Cluster for Sustainable Mining through its Batán Recovery plant is evidence of its commitment to a circular model. From Mieres, the company revalues industrial by-products, aligning its activity with the principles of sustainability and green economy.

The concession of the just transition node enables a new energy asset, but also strengthens a process of industrial reconversion that seeks to generate employment, reduce emissions and strengthen the economic fabric of the mining regions.
