The Ministry of the Environment ( MiAMBIENTE ) has launched a public consultation to receive comments on the terms of reference of the environmental component of the comprehensive audit of the Cobre Panamá Mine . This process, which will be open until February 7, 2025, seeks to ensure responsible environmental management in one of the country’s main mining operations.
The Panama Copper Mine and citizen participation
Following the principles of the Escazú Agreement and the Transparency Law, MiAMBIENTE has made the documents available for consultation at its headquarters and on its official website. Environmental organizations, communities, academics and citizens are invited to contribute their knowledge to optimize the audit.
The comprehensive audit will assess current environmental risks, propose mitigation measures and establish the costs of a restoration plan. The goal is to return the affected areas to a state as close as possible to the original ecosystem, guaranteeing biodiversity and ecological functionality.
Interested parties can send their comments in writing or through the official email: consulta.tdrsambientales@miambiente.gob.pa . This joint effort seeks to ensure that environmental decisions are inclusive and benefit both the environment and nearby communities.
The Ministry of Environment reaffirms its commitment to environmental governance and encourages all sectors to actively participate in the consultation. This dialogue is important to build effective and sustainable solutions for the future of the country.
