Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MHB) has signed a contract with PTTEP Sarawak Oil Limited and PTTEP HK Oil Limited, marking its first direct collaboration with the Thai company. The agreement covers the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of up to 11 wellhead platforms (WHP), intended for the development of marginal offshore fields in Sarawak, East Malaysia.

A Long-Term Contract

Awarded through competitive bidding, the contract will be executed over a 4-year period and currently includes confirmed work orders for 4 platforms. The structures will be fabricated at MHB’s shipyard in Pasir Gudang, Johor, leveraging the group’s technologically advanced facilities and operational expertise.

Standardization, Efficiency, and Replicability

The design of these platforms will be based on the Marginal Field Design Platform (MFDP) model, which adopts a fit-for-purpose approach with standardized components and a catalog of items. This methodology enables MHB to offer scalable solutions, improve execution timelines, and generate economies of scale across different developments.

In addition to reducing costs, the model allows for consistent replication of technical solutions, optimizing both construction and offshore installation.

Strategic Positioning

For MHB, this project represents a key step in its regional expansion strategy and reaffirms its reputation as a leading provider of offshore solutions. The company, which is part of the MISC Group and listed on Bursa Malaysia, has over 50 years of experience in engineering and shipbuilding.

In the words of Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor, Managing Director and CEO of MHB:

We sincerely thank PTTEP for their trust. This contract not only marks the beginning of our direct collaboration but also strengthens an alliance based on demanding technical standards and a shared commitment to responsible offshore development.

Nazir also emphasized that this agreement highlights MHB’s “technical excellence, disciplined execution, and cost competitiveness.”

A Key Partner for Offshore Development in Asia

PTTEP, the exploration and production arm of Thailand’s PTT Group, has placed its trust in MHB’s capability to support the accelerated development of resources in marginal and submarginal fields in Sarawak waters.

The alliance has strategic implications not only for the region’s energy development but also for Malaysia’s industrial leadership in offshore solutions.

Likewise, MHB strengthens its transition toward a broader portfolio, including carbon capture projects and HVDC for offshore renewable energy, in line with its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
