On August 21, the president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that the initiative of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec represents the answer to the current problems facing the Panama Canal .

During his morning press conference at the National Palace, López Obrador explained that the drought in the Panama Canal has created obstacles for the normal transit of ships through this interoceanic route.

“Now Panama does not have enough water to guarantee the passage of ships with more draft and they are reducing the number of ships that pass through the canal,” he said.

Isthmus of Tehuantepec: Mexico’s alternative to the situation in the Panama Canal

For this reason, the head of the Executive stated that the solution to the “blockage” of ships that Panama suffers is the Isthmus of Tehuantepec: “A blockage has already been made there, this has to do with world trade, and anyone knows that the option Faced with a situation like this, it is the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, that is why we are working on this project, because it is an alternative”.

The authorities in charge of the Panama Canal informed maritime transport operators last week that they will extend the restrictions on transit through the interoceanic route until September 2, allowing a maximum of 32 ships per day.

This situation has generated significant queues of vessels seeking to cross the Panamanian canal. Even images taken from an aircraft show more than 200 ships stranded at both ends of the canal due to severe drought.

“Panama, from the air, and look at the number of ships, it looks like a naval battle,” said the person who made the recording.

Likewise, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that concessions will not be granted for any of the initiatives aimed at promoting the growth of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

“Not much less to foreigners. It is a matter of sovereignty. This is going to be handled by the Mexican State and the Secretary of the Navy will take care of it,” said the president in a video that he uploaded to Twitter from Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.

On Sunday, López Obrador announced that he had completed his inspection tour of the refineries in Tabasco, Veracruz and Oaxaca, as well as reviewed the progress of the train on the Isthmus and the construction of a breakwater at Salina Cruz.

“We have this corridor of 300 meters (sic) to join the Pacific with the Atlantic. The countries of Asia with the East coast of the United States. That is why we are rehabilitating and building these breakwaters, rehabilitating the port of Salina Cruz, the port of Coatzacoalcos, rehabilitating the railroad,” said the president.
