The Mercedes-Benz eEconic has proven to be an innovative tool in helicopter refuelling at Airbus Helicopters in Donauwörth, Germany. This fully electric tanker allows for a full week of operation on a single charge , thanks to its efficient use of batteries and zero-emission technology.

Why the Mercedes-Benz eEconic?

The eEconic features a 16,500-litre tank that uses SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), which reduces emissions in the refuelling process and promotes a cleaner working environment at airports.

Thanks to its structure designed by Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, the eEconic features extended visibility and a panoramic viewing angle for the driver. In addition, its steered rear axle facilitates manoeuvring in crowded environments, allowing safe operation between moving helicopters. This combination of design and functionality makes it an ideal tool for use on busy airfields.

The vehicle’s tank was developed together with ROHR Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH, adapting specific components for electric vehicles. Furthermore, Airbus Helicopters and Mercedes-Benz are implementing this system as part of their commitment to sustainability, as Airbus plans to have its entire fleet certified to operate on 100% SAF by 2030 and reduce CO₂ emissions to zero by 2050 .

Efficient electric refueling technology

The eEconic’s charging system, which can power both the movement and the tank pump, is another key advantage of this electric vehicle . With a charging capacity of up to 160 kW, the eEconic guarantees a constant, uninterrupted power supply for several days. Furthermore, the reduction in noise, heat and emissions makes the eEconic a beneficial option for ground personnel and the operating environment.

By participating in this transition, the eEconic presents itself as a reference for how electric mobility can redefine the use of vehicles in the aviation industry and the commitment to sustainable operations in the sector.
