RoBoa,

A team of engineers from the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) have developed an innovative solution for rescue operations in hazardous environments called RoBoa . This flexible, snake-like robot has been designed to slither and extend into hard-to-reach areas such as rubble, pipes and other narrow spaces, offering a safe and effective tool in emergencies.

RoBoa Technology and Features

RoBoa is built from soft materials and moves using a pneumatic system that prevents sparks, which is crucial in areas at risk of explosion. In addition, the robot is capable of reaching a length of up to 100 meters , allowing it to reach areas where human rescuers would not be able to safely access. Its flexibility and strength allow it to operate in extreme conditions, making it a valuable resource in emergency management .

One of RoBoa’s most notable features is its ability to communicate directly with trapped people. Equipped with speakers and microphones, the robot facilitates contact between rescuers and victims , providing an essential line of communication in high-pressure situations. This technology has been conceived to locate people , to reassure them and keep them informed while their rescue is organised.

Student project with commercial aims

Initially developed as an academic project at the ETH Autonomous Systems Laboratory, RoBoa has been supported by a Pioneer Grant that has boosted its transition to the market. The robot’s upcoming unveiling at the ETH Industry Day on 21 November 2024 in Zurich marks a decisive step on its path to being deployed in the rescue and emergency sector. RoBoa’s co-founders hope that this technology will support disaster relief and have applications in the industrial inspection sector in high-risk environments.

RoBoa represents a breakthrough in rescue technology, offering a safe and effective model in spaces where human intervention is limited. With its adaptable design and ability to interact in real-time with victims, RoBoa is ready to meet the challenges of modern rescue, from natural disasters to situations in industrial facilities.
