The world’s most powerful single-cylinder engine has been revealed by Ducati, marking the return of its “singles” motorcycles. This 659 cc engine, with desmodromic distribution, has impressive characteristics with a short stroke.

With the capacity to reach 10,250 rpm, it provides a power of 77.5 HP at 9,750 rpm, and can reach 85 HP with a competition exhaust; In addition, it will be offered with a limited option for the A2 license. Standing out for its torque, 70% of the maximum torque is available at 3,000 rpm, reaching 63 Nm at 8,000 rpm.

This technical achievement of the company incorporates advanced features, such as 46.8 mm titanium intake valves and 38.2 mm steel exhaust valves, with desmodromic distribution. In addition, it has competition pistons with a diameter of 116 mm and a stroke of 62.4 mm, as well as a double countershaft to reduce inertia and vibrations. For critical components such as the cylinder head, clutch and alternator covers, a magnesium alloy has been used.

Single cylinder engine details

This engine has been developed from the twin-cylinder used in the 1299 Panigale, sharing elements such as the piston, the design of the combustion chamber and the desmodromic system. Ducati has implemented a transmission inspired by the four-cylinder Panigale, characterized by a longer first gear to take advantage of it at the optimal point of the torque curve when exiting slower corners.

Given the above, it is not trivial to consider the durability and maintenance of an engine of this type. Ducati suggests oil changes every 15,000 kilometers and checking the Desmo system and valves every 30,000 kilometers. These maintenance intervals are comparable to those of the Ducati Monster.

Now, beyond the importance of the introduction of this engine and the fact that Ducati once again has a single-cylinder motorcycle, the question arises as to which Ducati model will be in charge of launching it. After numerous rumors and speculation, Ducati has revealed its new Hypermotard 698 Mono, an impressive supermotard weighing 151 Kg and with a starting price of 14,990 euros, promises to be one of the most fun and manageable motorcycles available in the catalog from the house of Borgo Panigale.
