Matsumae Scholarships: The call to study and research in Japan is now open

The Matsumae Foundation opened its annual call to apply for research scholarships aimed at doctoral students who wish to deepen their knowledge in the areas of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Japan.

The Foundation offers 10 scholarships available to people from anywhere in the world. The goal is to conduct research at any host institution in Japan over a period of six months, between 2024 and 2025.

The aim of this program is to support young researchers to engage with Japanese research institutions and develop skills.

Applicants will have the opportunity to choose the institution (university, national research center or private sector) that hosts them in Japan; since, the organization will not be able to indicate or recommend any place to carry out the stay.

Matsumae Scholarship recipients will receive a monthly stipend, accident insurance, and opportunities for study and publication

Scholarship recipients will receive a monthly stipend of ¥220,000 to be used for research, materials, and personal expenses; an accident insurance abroad that is divided into personal accidents and sickness; and a relief fund upon arrival in Tokyo totaling ¥120,000.

Air travel from the nearest airport to the scholarship recipient’s residence to Tokyo; and to promote knowledge of Japan, the Foundation promotes study tours; even, after the stays, the scholarship holders will have the opportunity to maintain contact and receive publications.

Persons under 49 years of age of any nationality except Japanese nationality may apply; and have doctoral studies or equivalent, and knowledge of the Japanese and English languages.

That they have a letter of invitation from an institution in Japan, since it is necessary for applicants to choose a Japanese institution and they must also have been formally accepted by the entity, before applying.

It should be noted that applicants must have an occupation in their country of origin, and return at the end of their scholarship, in addition to contributing to the development of their nation. People who have had previous experiences of long stays in the country (except trips for conferences and/or vacations) may not apply.

To apply for this program it is necessary to download the application form, fill it out accurately, attach an identification photograph taken in the last three months and sign it. Once completed, it must be sent to the email address indicated in the call.

Likewise, it is necessary to add the research project that includes detailed information on its purpose, methodology, content and a road map. In addition to submitting a reprint of relevant publications in English or translated into it (if available), a resume that includes names and number of publications completed, and a letter of recommendation from your current employer highlighting academic achievements, qualities among others, with company letterhead mentioning the candidate’s possibility of accessing a period of leave for the time of the trip to Japan.

As well as, certified copies of the diplomas obtained in relevant institutions in English (if they are in another language they must be translated), and a letter of invitation signed by the professor in charge, using the institution’s letterhead, where detail the facilities of the place, the length of stay, available equipment, among other points.
