Matrix Renewables strengthens its presence in California with battery deal

Matrix already has more than 1 GW of battery systems under development in California.

Matrix Renewables, backed by TPG Rise, has entered into a capacity agreement with community utility Pioneer Community Energy for a 22 MW battery storage system in Kern County, California. The project, known as “Alamo,” will begin commercial operations in the first half of 2026.

A contract that strengthens California’s power grid

The signed agreement focuses on energy resource adequacy, a critical tool for ensuring energy availability at times of high demand. This partnership not only boosts security of supply in the state, but also promotes a transition to an emission-free electricity matrix.

Greg Janda, vice chairman of Pioneer’s board of directors and a councilman in Rocklin, noted that the contract brings clean, reliable power and reliable power at competitive prices, directly benefiting its nearly 175,000 residential and commercial customers.

Battery system at the core of Matrix strategy

The Alamo project is part of the national strategy of Matrix Renewables s national strategy to expand its presence in battery storage. The company currently has more than 1 GW under development in California alone, within a portfolio of 8.9 GW in the U.S. and 15.5 GW globally that encompasses solar powerstorage and green hydrogen.

Chris Matthew, commercial director of Matrix Renewables, emphasized the importance of storage in making California’s energy future viable. Cindy Tindell, head of U.S. operations, highlighted the company’s commitment to local development and long-term cooperation with host communities.

Local cooperation for energy transition

Pioneer Community Energy, headquartered in Rocklin and rated A- by S&P, consolidates its position as a key player in the community electrification of Placer and El Dorado. This partnership reinforces its role as a provider of sustainable and reliable energy alternatives for a population of close to one million people.

The contract represents a synergy between a global investment platform and a local not-for-profit operator, with a shared focus on reliability, sustainability and regional development.
