The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announces the launch of the first gigawatt-scale project integrating solar photovoltaic energy and battery storage with 24-hour uninterrupted operation. This project, located in Abu Dhabi, will improve the management of clean energy, ensuring constant and reliable availability.
The first solar energy and continuous storage project
The announcement was made in the presence of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and was led by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company ( EWEC ). According to Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, this system responds to the historical challenge of intermittency in renewable energy generation.
With an installed capacity of 5.2 GW of solar power and a storage system of 19 GWh, the project can deliver up to 1 GW of baseload power daily. This makes it the largest combined system of its kind in the world, setting a global standard in renewable technology.
In addition to its contribution to energy supply, the project will create more than 10,000 jobs, demonstrating the potential of the energy transition to drive economic development. This development is also an integral part of the UAE’s energy strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
This system provides clean energy continuously and supports the implementation of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, strengthening the UAE’s energy infrastructure and consolidating Abu Dhabi as a benchmark in global sustainability.
