On September 1, the tranquility of the waters off Tanah Merah, Singapore, was disturbed by a maritime incident involving two major vessels: the Singapore-flagged tanker Marine Dynamo and the Maltese-flagged bulk carrier Flag Gangos. The collision occurred about 8 kilometers offshore, causing no disruption to general navigation.
Ship-to-ship collision and fuel spill
As a result of the impact, the captain of the Marine Dynamo reported a marine diesel oil (MGO) spill. (MGO). The MPA confirmed the presence of light layers of this fuel in the water. Fortunately, this is a light type of fuel, similar to diesel fuel, which is expected to evaporate and dissolve quickly in the environment.
The prompt response of the authorities was vital, as the MPA immediately deployed its patrol and oil spill response vessels, as well as drones to monitor the situation from the air and spray dispersants.
Despite the magnitude of the vessels involved, the accident left no serious injuries. One crew member of the Marine Dynamo suffered minor contusions and sprains and was treated on board. Similarly, all crew members on both vessels are safe.
The MPA has reassured the maritime community by confirming that there is no significant impact on the safety of navigation in the area, maintaining the transit of vessels without major setbacks.
The Maritime Navigation Authority issued an alert to inform nearby vessels of the incident. The MPA is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the collision.
