Woodland Biofuels has announced a planned $1.35 billion investment to establish the world’s largest ultra-green renewable natural gas and hydrogen facility at the Port of South Louisiana in the United States.
Woodland Biofuels’ Renewable Natural Gas Facility
The Toronto-based company aims to use waste biomass to produce sustainable biofuels for use in transportation, heating and power generation, driving a shift towards emissions reduction and clean energy.
Project planning will be carried out in two phases. The first will focus on the world’s largest carbon-negative renewable natural gas facility, with the capacity to eliminate 210,000 tons of CO₂ per year. The second phase will encompass the construction of the ultra-green hydrogen plant, which will eliminate approximately 660,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
Ultimately, the project is expected to achieve a total removal of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the ecosystem, making it one of the largest carbon removal projects globally.
Woodland Biofuels CEO Greg Nuttall commented on the impact of this project: “We are very excited about this project. Our sustainable biofuel plant will be an economic engine for St. John Parish and beyond. We are looking forward to building ties with the local community and tapping into Louisiana’s world-class workforce. We look forward to building ties with the local community and tapping into Louisiana’s world-class workforce. “
Phase 1 of the project will generate approximately 500 jobs during construction and 110 direct and permanent jobs. In addition, 259 indirect jobs will be created, for a total of 869 jobs, of which 369 will be permanent.
Participation and grants for the future of the projects
The Louisiana Department of Economic Development has offered an incentive package valued at more than $250 million, including performance-based grants and industrial tax exemption programs, to support the implementation of this project.
Port of South Louisiana Executive Director Paul Matthews noted,“This significant investment demonstrates that PortSL and the state of Louisiana are leading the way in diversifying our energy industry, which will result in the creation of hundreds of good-paying jobs.”
