The world’s largest container shipping company, through its main ecological transition advisor, Concepción Boo Arias, indicated that the only way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport and encourage companies to Setting zero emission targets in the sector is setting an end date for fossil fuels in the shipping industry through global regulation.

“Putting the correct global regulations in place is very important. Investments only come when regulation is in place,” Arias noted during an IMO (International Maritime Organization) side event on the production of future marine fuels in developing countries, held at COP27.

In addition to an exact end date for the use of fossil fuels, the shipping industry needs a global carbon tax, global fuel standards and instruments to make the global energy transition socially and commercially viable, he added.

Maersk CEO Søren Skou has proposed a ship fuel carbon tax of at least $450 per tonne of fuel as a way for the shipping industry to bridge the gap between fossil fuels and green fuels.

The company urged the IMO to implement a market-based measure by 2025 to accelerate the decarbonisation of shipping and use this carbon tax to create a fund that could be used to finance investment in developing countries in line with the correct notion of transition.
