In an event that has captured the attention of the mining and jewelry world, Lucara Diamond Corp. has announced the names of two of the world’s largest diamonds recovered from its Karowe mine in Botswana. The finds, weighing 2,488 carats and 1,094 carats, reflect the mine’s geological richness and are imbued with deep cultural significance for the African nation.
The world’s 2 largest diamonds light up Botswana’s future
The 2,488-carat diamond, now known as Motswedi, was recovered in August 2024 and its name has a strong link to the Setswana language. Motswedi, meaning “ spring of water ” or “ stream of underground water emerging to the surface ,” symbolizes vitality and renewal. This name highlights Lucara’s commitment to Botswana’s cultural traditions and connection to nature, a reflection of the importance of these discoveries to both mining and local heritage.
The 1,094-carat diamond has been named Seriti, a word that means “ aura ” or “ presence ” in Setswana. This name reflects the power and cultural impact that these geological treasures have not only on the mining industry, but also on the identity of the people of Botswana. Seriti embodies the history and cultural heritage of a region known for its deep connection to the land and its natural resources.
An inclusive and meaningful process
To decide on the names, Lucara launched a national competition in November 2024 , inviting all citizens and residents of Botswana to submit their nominations. More than 39,000 entries were received, and the winning names were selected by a panel of experts, including prominent figures such as Professor Thapelo Joseph Otlogetswe of the University of Botswana. The winners were awarded the honour of naming these historic diamonds , cash prizes and an exclusive visit to the Karowe mine.
