Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s leading multinational conglomerates, has won its largest order to date with an Ultra Mega contract from QatarEnergy LNG . This historic achievement cements the company’s position as a key player in the global offshore hydrocarbons industry.
QatarEnergy LNG, a subsidiary of state-owned energy giant QatarEnergy, has awarded the North Field Offshore Compression Production Sustainability Project (NFPS COMP 4) to its hydrocarbon business , L&T Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH).
While the exact value of the contract has not been disclosed, it is classified as Ultra Mega, meaning it exceeds INR 150 billion (~US$1.7 billion), making it the largest contract L&T has received so far.
Scope of work and project details
The contract covers a broad scope of work, including engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of two offshore compression complexes. These complexes will consist of large offshore platforms with advanced compression and power generation facilities.
The project also includes the construction of housing, burning platforms, interconnecting bridges, and various associated structures. These facilities will be located approximately 80 kilometers off the northeast coast of Qatar.
As part of the North Field expansion, which includes other major projects to increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity, this contract plays a crucial role in maintaining Qatar’s energy security and dominance in the global LNG market.
L&T and the importance of the Ultra Mega contract
Winning the QatarEnergy LNG Offshore Ultra Mega contract is a significant achievement for L&T. This prestigious project not only strengthens our global energy portfolio but also supports Qatar’s energy security objectives. We are grateful to QatarEnergy LNG for entrusting us with this complex and strategically important project.
Declaró S. N. Subrahmanyan, presidente y director general de L&T.
He added that they hope to set new standards in project execution that will strengthen Qatar’s position as a leader in the global LNG industry.
Subramanian Sarma, Deputy Managing Director and President of L&T, also expressed his appreciation for the contract, saying that the award of this contract reflects the trust and confidence QatarEnergy LNG has placed in L&T’s expertise in executing large-scale projects.
North Field, the heart of Qatar’s LNG expansion
The North Field, shared between Qatar and Iran (where it is known as South Pars), is the world’s largest non-associated gas field . At over 6,000 square kilometers, it covers roughly half the size of the State of Qatar. This field plays a pivotal role in Qatar’s ambitions to remain the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
With the expansion projects underway, including the North Field East, South, and West portions, Qatar’s LNG production capacity is expected to increase from 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 142 mtpa by 2030, further cementing the country’s leadership in the global LNG sector.
A milestone for L&T’s energy business
The company’s ability to deliver such complex offshore projects underscores its experience and reliability, reaffirming its role as a trusted partner to global energy giants such as QatarEnergy LNG.
The execution of this project will set new standards in the industry and pave the way for future collaborations, consolidating L&T’s position in the offshore energy sector.
As Qatar continues to expand its LNG production capacity, L&T’s role in this colossal energy project marks a defining moment in the company’s history . With its unmatched engineering and project execution capabilities, L&T is uniquely positioned to support Qatar’s long-term energy security and growth.
