Construction of the Green Energy Port, the world’s largest LNG storage tank cluster, has been completed in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, eastern China. This project, which took three years to design and build, marks a new beginning in the country’s energy infrastructure.

The Green Energy Port has six LNG storage tanks with a capacity of 270,000 m³ each (the largest in the world) and four additional tanks of 220,000 m³. In total, the complex has a storage capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters.

The construction was carried out by China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), the country’s leading offshore oil and gas producer. In an interview with China Central Television, Li Feng, deputy general manager of CNOOC Gas Power, highlighted the relevance of the project for the energy security of the Yangtze River Delta region and China’s green development.

The Green Energy Port is a key component in China’s natural gas production, supply, storage and sales network. According to Li, this project connects the country’s major gas transportation networks, including those that transport gas from western to eastern regions and the China-Russia eastern pipeline.

About natural gas supply

In addition to its storage capacity, the Green Energy Port also handles the delivery of gas via tanker trucks. This system guarantees the supply of natural gas to provinces such as Jiangsu, Henan, Anhui and Shandong, strengthening energy security in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The project is designed to handle 6 million tons of LNG per year, equivalent to 8.5 billion m3of gaseous natural gas. This amount can sustain the consumption of Jiangsu province for approximately 28 months.

Also, as part of its commitment to peak and carbon neutrality, China is expanding its natural gas storage capacities. The country plans to establish six major gas storage centers, with a total of 50 facilities and an estimated operating gas volume of more than 100 billion m3.
