In a new phase of energy cooperation between Iraq and the international private sector, the American company KBR has been awarded an Integrated Field Management Services (IFMS) contract by the state-owned Basra Oil Company (BOC) to lead operations at the Majnoon oil field. Located in southern Iraq, it is one of the largest in the world, with estimated reserves exceeding 38 billion barrels of crude oil.
This new agreement positions KBR as a strategic partner in the modernization of the field, applying advanced engineering solutions, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence tools to optimize production in a sustainable and safe manner.
A contract that redefines oil management in Iraq
The contract covers upstream engineering services, operations management, and comprehensive maintenance. KBR will also be responsible for critical tasks such as reservoir engineering and subsurface drilling, consolidating an integrated approach aimed at increasing the field’s operational efficiency.
This contract underscores KBR’s deep and diverse technical capability, which includes upstream operational services, and its decades-long commitment to Iraq. Oil field development projects of this scale and complexity require a strategic, reliable, and high-value provider with proven experience in the country, rigorous execution, and a strong safety culture. We are proud to support BOC in advancing Iraq’s energy ambitions and generating sustained long-term value.
Jay Ibrahim, President of KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions.
Local job creation and knowledge transfer
One of the most significant aspects of the project is its impact on the Iraqi economy. The initial execution of the contract is expected to involve around 2,000 local workers, particularly in the areas of engineering, construction, and oil services.
KBR has also expressed its intention to work with local teams and global engineering centers, promoting technical training and knowledge transfer to local talent. This includes the implementation of community programs aimed at strengthening professional capabilities within the national energy sector.
Established track record in Iraq
KBR is not a new player in Iraq’s energy landscape; its experience includes collaborations with the Ministry of Planning in formulating a Development Master Plan, as well as executing maintenance projects in major fields such as Rumaila, and strategies to monetize flared natural gas.
This new project at the Majnoon oil field aligns with Iraq’s goals of modernizing its energy infrastructure, diversifying its economy, and ensuring sustained growth through strategic alliances.
Long-term projection
The combination of technical expertise, commitment to operational safety, and a digital focus makes KBR a key partner for Iraq’s energy future. With this step, Majnoon is on track to establish itself as a model of efficiency and development within the global oil sector.
