Tokyo LNG Tanker, a fully integrated subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, has entered into a long-term LNG carrier lease agreement with. Mitsui OSK Line (MOL), a Japanese shipping firm. This event marks the operation of an innovative liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that is planned to be added to the fleet.
This construction project by Hanwha Ocean a renowned South Korean shipyard located in Geoje, the 174,000 m³ membrane-type LNG carrier will be ready for delivery in 2026. Equipped with state-of-the-art engine technology from MAN Energy Solutions, a German giant in the industry, the vessel is designed to use boil-off gas in addition to traditional fuel oil.
LNG carrier operability and performance
By integrating this vessel into its operation, Tokyo LNG Tanker will expand its fleet to a total of eleven LNG carriers under long-term agreements. This acquisition of Tokyo Gas enhances its commercial capabilities and strengthens its LNG supply chain, thus ensuring an increase in import volumes of this crucial energy resource.
The Japanese company is targeting an annual handling of 20 million tons of natural gas per year. natural gas for the fiscal period from April 2030 to March 2031, of which 5 million are for LNG trade.
Despite divesting its total shares in four Australian LNG projects in 2022, Tokyo Gas assures that this strategy will not negatively affect its LNG acquisitions for its commercial and strategic future in the Asian continent.
