The natural gas production at the Leviathan field, one of Israel’s main energy assets, has been suspended following a direct order from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The decision, officially communicated to Chevron Mediterranean Limited on February 28, responds to a security recommendation issued by Israeli authorities.
The project operator, Chevron, received instructions to immediately cease operations at the offshore platform, while the risk assessment remains in effect. Authorities indicated that the Petroleum Commissioner may issue new operational directives depending on how the situation evolves.
Internal Emergency and Force Majeure Clause
On the same day, the Commissioner notified the field partners of the need to adopt a flexible operational policy, considering the special state of emergency declared on the home front. This policy could involve additional interruptions depending on periodic assessments.
Given this scenario, NewMed Energy, the principal partner with a 45.34% stake, confirmed that together with Chevron (39.66%) and Ratio Energies (15%), they will activate the force majeure clause included in their supply contracts. This will allow them to notify customers of the suspension without incurring contractual penalties.
Impact of Gas Shutdown at Leviathan and Its Strategic Context
Leviathan represents a key component in the regional energy matrix, exporting gas to neighboring countries and supplying domestic demand. Its shutdown raises questions about immediate energy supply and Israel’s international commitments in the sector.
NewMed Energy, formerly known as Delek Drilling, is the country’s leading energy partnership and has been a central player in the field’s development. For its part, Chevron maintains its focus on operating under strict safety protocols, aligned with government requirements.
Authorities have not detailed the estimated duration of the suspension or the specific conditions for resuming production. Future decisions are expected to be subject to the evolution of the national security landscape and new regulatory instructions.
