Indian Oil Corporation Limited(IndianOil) has received ISCC CORSIA certification for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel(SAF) at its Panipat refinery, becoming the first company in the country to achieve this international recognition.
Sustainable production of PBS under the ISCC CORSIA scheme
The ISCC CORSIA standard(International Sustainability and Carbon Certification for the ICAO CORSIA scheme) validates that the PAS produced meets the most stringent requirements in terms of traceability, sustainability and minimization of emissions during its life cycle. This endorsement will enable the sustainable fuel generated in India to be used by airlines operating under international carbon reduction rules.
During a ceremony in New Delhi, representatives of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas(MoP&NG), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA), the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies(NABCB) and the certifying body Cotecna highlighted the institutional coordination that made this progress possible.
The Panipat refinery is a strategic node in the national energy infrastructure, which now has a certified production capacity of SAF. This fuel has been evaluated under strict carbon emissions and traceability criteria.
Recognition of IndianOil sets a precedent for other production facilities in the country. The adoption of certified PBS is one of the essential pieces in India’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070.
With this validation, IndianOil strengthens its role as a leading state-owned company in sustainable energy initiatives. The framework established by ISCC CORSIA will also be useful in facilitating future exports and positioning the country as a strategic supplier of PBS in Asia.
