During his participation in the XXI SLOM DayLudovic Poix, Project Manager for Maintenance, Repair and Inspection at Imodco, shared details about the company’s recent work in offshore terminals and maintenance in Panama, as well as its strategy to strengthen operational safety, sustainability and emergency response throughout the region.
Imodco, a globally headquartered company and part of the group SBM Offshorehas more than 60 years of experience in the development and installation of CALM buoys. Throughout its history it has implemented more than 450 systems worldwide, becoming a reference in engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of offshore solutions.
Modernization of old infrastructure
Poix commented that the company carried out the refurbishment of three cargo buoys belonging to Petróleo de Panamá, each with more than 15 years of use, different configurations and old design.
The objective of the project was to unify the design of the three buoys to simplify spare parts management, facilitate inspection operations and adapt the structures to the current needs of the Panamanian operator. One of the most relevant improvements was the replacement of the central piping unit, the rotating unit through which the fluid circulates inside the buoy, with a new generation model, with greater mechanical reliability and better response capacity in critical conditions.
The modernization of these buoys not only responds to functionality criteria, but also integrates elements to reduce environmental risks, especially in the event of possible crude oil leaks. The incorporation of a special sealing system and a leak recovery mechanism in the buoys prevents any fluid leakage from reaching the sea.

Jettyless, springless solutions
During the conversation, Ludovic also commented on the value of Jettyless solutions, i.e. systems for loading and unloading hydrocarbons or liquid products that do not require a traditional fixed dock. In his experience, Jettyless systems offer several operational advantages:
- Reduced risk by not having to bring ships close to sensitive coastal areas
- Lower maintenance compared to traditional infrastructure
- Increased operational flexibility in the face of changing sea conditions
Local offshore maintenance with global reach
The Panama intervention is not an isolated case for Imodco, as they operate as a global network of offshore terminal specialists. offshore terminalsThe intervention in Panama is not an isolated case for Imodco, as they operate as a global network of specialists in offshore terminals, with multidisciplinary teams capable of attending both the design of new solutions and the offshore maintenance of systems in operation.
Poix pointed out that the company’s organizational model is based on empowered teams with fluid communication, which allows the company to respond with agility, share knowledge between regions and ensure consistent service at a global level.
All these qualities reinforce Imodco’s position as a strategic partner for operators seeking to modernize their infrastructures, ensure operational continuity and minimize environmental risks.
