Iberia lanza Círculo SAF

Iberia has presented the SAF Circle, an initiative that seeks to transform the way companies deal with the emissions generated by their air travel. The project, which has the backing of Amadeus, BBVA, Repsol and Telefónica, allows companies to associate part of their Scope 3 emissions with the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). (SAF).

SAF circle for sustainable aviation

The SAF Circle community was created with the aim of facilitating companies’ active participation in the decarbonization of the aviation sector. decarbonization of the aviation sector. Thanks to this program, corporate and cargo flights operated by Iberia will be able to incorporate SAF certified in accordance with the European Renewable Energy Directive. Companies will receive the corresponding accreditation of use and will be able to improve their environmental performance in sustainability indicators.

Participating companies, classified by tiers, obtain benefits in Iberia’s loyalty program and can access service improvements. This approach seeks to reward environmental involvement with competitive advantages, aligning sustainability and business strategy.

Part of the fuel used in this program is supplied from Repsol’s Cartagena plant, which has the capacity to produce up to 250,000 tons of PBS per year. This reinforces the Spanish value chain in clean energy and consolidates the position of PBS as a viable alternative to conventional kerosene.

Key tool to reduce indirect emissions

The use of SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the life cycle of the fuel, without the need to modify engines or airport infrastructures. In this context, the SAF Circle represents an immediate solution to address Scope 3 emissions from corporate travel and freight transport.

Executives of the founding companies have stressed that this type of collaboration is essential to advance the energy transition. From responsible digitalization to circular economy, the SAF Circle fits within a multi-sectoral approach that promotes concrete actions against climate change.
