Iberdrola, through its subsidiary in Germany, has signed a long-term energy sale contract with Stahl Holding Saar (SHS) for a period of 15 years that covers an annual consumption of 200 gigawatts/hour (GWh), as reported the energy company.
Specifically, the agreed renewable energy generation is equivalent to approximately 50 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind capacity, which will be supplied by the “Baltic Eagle” offshore wind project, developed by the group led by Ignacio Sánchez Galán and which is currently in development. construction in the Baltic Sea.
The clean energy provided by Iberdrola will allow SHS to sustainably transform the business operations of its Saarstahl and Dillinger companies and reduce its future CO 2 emissions from steel production.
This is the first of several long-term energy sales contracts that are planned between the two companies for the next few years. In addition to this partnership, they are exploring other collaborative opportunities such as on-site renewable energy generation and green hydrogen production.
The “Baltic Eagle” offshore wind farm is the second of Iberdrola’s three major projects in Germany, along with “Wikinger” and “Windanker”.
“Baltic Eagle” is expected to come online at the end of 2024 with a total capacity of 476 MW, which will be enough to supply 475,000 homes with renewable energy and avoid the emission of 800,000 tons of CO 2 per year.
Future Iberdrola contracts with other companies
As part of its growth in the strategic German market, the energy company is paying particular attention to partnering with energy-intensive companies.
The first electricity company in Europe and the second in the world also maintains alliances through energy sales contracts with Amazon, Telefónica, Mercadona, Holcim, Vodafone, Heineken, ABInBev or Renault. In fact, Iberdrola recently closed a contract with Grupo Salzgitter to provide energy through its “Baltic Eagle” offshore wind farm in Germany.
