Iberdrola plans to increase the total capacity of the Kitty Hawk offshore wind project, located off the coast of the Outer Banks, in the states of Virginia and North Carolina (USA), from 2.5 GW to 3.5 GW.

The decision to increase capacity comes “since current turbine technology allows the potential capacity of the leased area to be increased,” according to the company in its results for the third quarter of 2022.

The Kitty Hawk project is developed by the Avangrid company, owned by Iberdrola, and is currently in the process of obtaining federal permits, which began in the summer of last year.

According to the submitted Construction and Operations Plan (COP), Kitty Hawk is planned to be built in phases, the first of which will have a capacity of 800 MW and the entire development will have a total generating capacity of up to 2.5 GW, once all the stages have been built. The first phase is expected to start construction in 2024.
