Honda and LG Energy Solutions, the LG subsidiary that manufactures lithium batteries for electric cars, reached an agreement to build a plant in the United States in which they will invest 4.4 billion dollars.
The construction of the factory will begin in early 2023 so that, by the end of 2025, the mass production of the lithium-ion battery cells for the next electric cars from Honda will begin.
The plant will be built and operated by a joint venture between the two companies, which is expected to be established later this year.
Although Honda and LG Energy Solutions did not indicate a location for this upcoming factory, it is possible that it could be built near one of Honda’s Ohio, Alabama or Indiana assembly plants for better logistics. The next plant will have an annual production capacity of approximately 40 GWh.
With this announcement, Honda joins other automakers such as Volkswagen, Stellantis, General Motors and Hyundai that will also build plants that will make lithium batteries for their upcoming electric vehicles.
