Helical Fusion accelerates plan to build first fusion plant

This investment is a preview of the Helix Program, a technology roadmap that seeks international attention for its stellarator-based approach.

Japan’s Helical Fusion has secured ¥2.3 billion in a Series A financing round, strengthening its goal of developing the first operational steady-state net power fusion plant globally.

The technological approach for the fusion plant

Tokamaks like other pulsed fusion systems integrate another type of technology, and the Helical Fusion reactor is based on the helical stellarator. A system that allows continuous magnetic continuous magnetic confinement of the plasmawhich is essential for constant power generation.

This development is inspired by the legacy of the Large Helical Device(LHD) at the National Institute of Fusion Science in Japan, the team has moved decades of experimental data to an applied engineering stage.

The Helix Program includes two complementary devices. On the one hand, Helix HARUKA acts as a system validation platform. On the other hand, Helix KANATA is projected as a full-scale pilot plant, designed to operate 24/7 generating net positive energy.

The funding received has been backed by a broad group of investors, including SBI Investment, NISSAY Capital, Toyoda Gosei and Daiwa House Ventures. These funds will enable the rapid development of technologies such as superconducting superconducting magnets and liquid metal blankets, key components for reactor stability and maintenance.

Helical Fusion is consolidating partnerships with Japanese technology companies in areas such as cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum andmaterials engineering. These collaborations seek to improve the transition from a working prototype to a scalable commercial reactor.

Fusion development is accelerating worldwide.

However, among all available methods, our stellarator approach is based on decades of research conducted at the best universities and national institutes in Japan.

When considering what can realistically be achieved with today’s technology, we are confident that we are the right ones. Our technology will be an invaluable resource not only for Asia, but for humanity.
