Singapore-based renewable energy developer Gurīn Energy has selected Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, to supply a battery system(BESS) for its first Japanese project. This project will be located in the city of Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, and will contribute to the stability and flexibility of the country’s power grid.
An efficient battery system in Fukushima
This system is based on lithium-ion batteriesand will offer a storage capacity of more than 1 GWh, enabling the delivery of 240 MW of energy for four hours. In addition, it includes energy conversion and management technologies, such as Saft’s I-Sight cloud platform, which integrates artificial intelligence-based functions for monitoring and data analysis.
This storage system deployment aims to improve the responsiveness of the Japanese power grid to the intermittency of renewable energy. Japan aims to increase the share of renewable energy from 27% today to 40-50% by 2040, so the ability to store energy and release it on demand is crucial.
Saft will be in charge of the installation, commissioning and maintenance of the system. By implementing its expertise in advanced energy solutions and the application of AI, Saft strengthens its position in the Asian market.
Asia is a crucial region for the sustained, long-term growth of Saft’s ESS business.
We are proud that Gurīn Energy has selected Saft for this project in Japan, which is key to the country’s energy future.
Saft’s proven track record in lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, coupled with Gurīn Energy’s ambition in developing renewable projects, will play a key role in Japan’s energy transition.
