Energy Vault Holdings, Inc., a leader in sustainable solutions for large-scale energy storage, together with its partners Atlas Renewable and China Tianying (CNTY), announced on August 2 that it has begun the first stages of implementation of the gravity energy storage system (GESS) EVx™, the first of its kind in the world.
The 25 MW/100 MWh EVx GESS system is located on the outskirts of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China, next to a wind farm and a national grid interconnection point. Its purpose is to improve and balance China’s renewable energy grid through energy storage and supply. In June, the commissioning of the power electronics and the new, highly efficient “belt” lifting systems began.
The system is expected to be fully connected to the grid in the fourth quarter, as agreed with local state grid authorities, making the EVx the first commercial large-scale non-pumped, hydrogravity energy storage system for utilities Worldwide.
World’s first gravity energy storage system
Based on the highly efficient results of the 5 MW EV1 tower that was interconnected to the grid in Switzerland in mid-2020 with round-trip efficiency (RTE) greater than 75%, the new EVx system, with improvements in the design of the efficiency chain, achieve a TEN greater than 80%. If achieved, the new gravity system will lead in energy storage efficiency compared to other forms of process mechanical, thermodynamic, compressed air, or flow cell systems.
“We are happy to share our continued progress and a critical milestone we have reached with our partners Atlas Renewable and China Tianying regarding the start of commissioning activities for the world’s first EVx gravity energy storage system,” he said. Robert Piconi, President and CEO of Energy Vault.
For his part, Eric Fang, CEO of Atlas Renewable stated: “This milestone could not have been achieved without the unprecedented collaboration between the collective teams in the US and China. The world’s two largest economies have come together to meaningfully address climate change. The innovative and revolutionary technology of the Energy Vault is poised to play a critical role in supporting China’s clean energy transition and the 30-60 decarbonization policy.”
Last week, Jiangsu Nengying New Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Tianying, announced the signing of an agreement with the Huailai County People’s Government to build a new 100 MWh gravity energy storage project. in Cunrui City, Hebei Province, China.
This project will provide green, stable, and green electricity to data centers in the region, highlighting the growing demand and value proposed by Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage technology. In addition, it highlights the effective execution of local construction and commercial development teams and the potential impact that Energy Vault’s gravity energy storage technology could have in reducing near-term carbon emissions globally.
Energy Vault will provide additional information about this expansion during the company’s second quarter 2023 financial results conference call, which is scheduled for today.
