US company Lyten has announced an investment of more than $1 billion to build the world’s first lithium-sulfur battery gigafactory in Nevada . This plant, which will be located near Reno, will produce up to 10 GWh of batteries annually and will be key to boosting electrification in sectors such as micromobility, space and defense. The initial phase will begin in 2027.
Lyten has developed a technology that promises to revolutionize the energy market. Its lithium-sulfur batteries are lighter and more energy efficient than traditional lithium-ion batteries. In fact, the new cells will be 40% lighter than current ones and will be manufactured entirely in the United States, using abundant local materials such as sulfur, which reduces the dependence on minerals such as nickel and cobalt.
Battery Gigafactory in Nevada to Create 1,000 Jobs
The choice of Nevada as the home of this gigafactory is no coincidence. The region is establishing itself as a strategic hub for battery manufacturing in the United States , and the project will create more than 1,000 high-quality jobs. From researchers to technicians, the plant will require a highly skilled workforce, which will also benefit local communities through partnerships with universities and training programs.
Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries will also play a key role in the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy. By producing batteries more cost-effectively and with easily accessible materials, the company aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions in its processes. This initiative is supported by the government of Nevada, which sees in this project an opportunity to consolidate its green economy.
Lyten plans to enter emerging markets such as micromobility, drones and space vehicles with its batteries starting in 2024. With a portfolio of hundreds of potential customers, the Nevada gigafactory will be essential to meet this growing demand and consolidate the United States as a leader in the production of advanced batteries.
