General Motors (GM) is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the United States. In an effort to expand the network of fast-charging stations and make the transition to electric vehicles even more attractive, GM is using machine learning and advanced data analytics to identify optimal locations for new charging stations .

Strategically located electric vehicle charging stations

With electric vehicle sales reaching record levels, GM has realized that one of the biggest challenges to mass adoption of these vehicles remains access to adequate charging infrastructure . The company has stepped up its collaboration with key companies such as EVgo and Pilot Flying J to add thousands of new charging points nationwide.

By using geospatial algorithms and predictive analytics tools, GM data scientists are able to analyze traffic patterns and EV driver behavior to determine strategic locations where fast-charging stations should be installed . This AI-powered approach optimizes charger distribution in high-traffic locations, reducing driver uncertainty and facilitating the shift to EVs.

Strategic alliances

One of the big benefits of this strategy is that GM isn’t working alone . In collaboration with EVgo, the automaker has committed to more than 2,850 fast-charging stations nationwide, including 350 kW stations in major metropolitan areas. These stations feature easy-to-access designs, bright lighting, and canopies to protect users from inclement weather, providing a more convenient and safer charging experience .

Additionally, the partnership with Pilot Flying J has allowed GM to add up to 2,000 new charging stations at travel centers across the country , making it easier for families to take long trips without worrying about charger availability.

The future of electric vehicle charging

GM is committed to a future free of emissions, accidents and congestion. To achieve this, the company is using its ability to analyze large volumes of data and make AI-based recommendations on where to install new charging stations. This approach promises to ease driver anxiety, ensuring that more people feel comfortable adopting electric vehicles as their primary transportation option.

Investing in charging infrastructure and using mathematical optimization tools for site selection are critical steps toward building a more robust, accessible and efficient public charging network. GM is thus ensuring it remains at the forefront of the energy transition.
