The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet(GEAPP) has unveiled a plan to raise $100 million by 2028 to transform India’s power grids into smart systems.

Under this scheme, the organization is seeking the backing of financial giants such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. This flow of capital will enable the electricity infrastructure to evolve towards automated systems through the use of artificial intelligence. In this way, it is expected to improve the reliability of supply and facilitate the integration of renewable sources in real time.

GEAPP has invested an initial $25 million in pilot projects within Rajasthan and Delhi. These efforts serve as the foundation for an expansion that will reach 15 utilities across the country. The goal is clear: to lower operating costs and pollutant emissions through accurate and efficient electricity load monitoring.

The New Delhi administration has set itself the target of reducing its emissions intensity by 45% by the end of this decade. In this scenario, grid digitization acts as the necessary underpinning to achieve the 500 GW of capacity promised at the COP26. Likewise, the participation of entities backed by the Rockefeller and IKEA foundations provides the financial stability needed to turn technical concepts into operational realities.

The favorable development of this initiative will depend on the ability of multilateral agencies to identify projects with high social and environmental returns. The transition to the goal of zero emissions by 2070 demands an infrastructure that supports the country’s rapid population and industrial growth.
