The energy company Gasum inaugurated a new biogas station in the city of Kajaani, marking the first distribution point for this renewable fuel. renewable fuel in the Kainuu region. This infrastructure, which offers both liquefied gas (LBG) and compressed gas (CBG), will supply everything from passenger cars to heavy vehicles, expanding access to biogas on key routes in the country.
Biogas station at the service of sustainable transport
Strategically located next to Highway 5 in the Takkaranta district, the station already provides liquefied gas and plans to start distributing compressed gas from July 16, 2025. This new facility is part of Gasum’s plan to expand the use of biogas on Finland’s main roads, thus facilitating transportation with lower emissions.
Biogas is a key option in the energy transition in the transportation sector. According to the company, its use reduces emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels. This advantage is particularly relevant for freight transport, where long distances andwhere long distances and heavy loads increase the environmental impact.
Juho Kurra, Gasum’s Finnish Traffic Business Director, noted that this new station will enable logistics companies to operate more sustainably, expanding their coverage with cleaner transport services.
Renewable target to 2027
Gasum’s strategic goal is to introduce 7 TWh of renewable gas annually to the Nordic market by 2027, which would triple its current volume. This expansion would allow it to avoid the emission of up to 1.8 million tons of CO₂ each year by its customers.
With this opening, Gasum takes a further step in its ambition to transform the transport network of Northern Europe towards a model based on low-carbon energy.
