The joint project between Pilot LNG and Seapath Group has all the necessary permits to begin construction of the Houston-Galveston region’s first LNG bunkering port. The facility is located in Shoal Point, Texas, and is designed to supply clean marine fuel to a fleet of ships.
Regulatory developments at LNG bunkering port
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued the Section 408 and 404/10 approvals, while the Coast Guard has provided the Letter of Recommendation for Waterway Suitability Assessment. With this, the Galveston LNG Bunker Port of Galveston(GLBP) completes the required permitting to move toward a final investment decision, expected in mid-2025.
These authorizations are in addition to those obtained from the Texas Railroad Commission and the state’s Commission on Environmental Quality. In addition, the company estimates that operations will begin in the second half of 2027.
The GLBP is located on the Texas City Ship Channel, establishing it as a strategic node to serve the maritime traffic of the ports of Houston, Galveston and Texas City. Moreover, the terminal will have the capacity to deliver up to 720,000 gallons per day of LNG, with storage distributed in two tanks of 3 million gallons each.
This project becomes the first infrastructure dedicated exclusively to marine LNG bunkering on the Gulf Coast, responding to the growing demand for cleaner energy in the shipping industry.
