The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in the port city of Ulsan (South Korea) has kicked off the construction of the FSRU vessel that will operate permanently in the Gulf of Gdańsk, north of Poland. This event, marked by the cutting of the first steel plate, represents the tangible start of the fabrication stage following the design phase.
Key players of the FSRU in Poland
The Polish state-owned operator GAZ-SYSTEM confirmed that this unit will be the main element of the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal (LNG) terminal in Gdańsk. This infrastructure will make it possible to offload, store and regasify gas, decisively increasing the country’s energy capacity.
White Eagle Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of the Japanese group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), is the company in charge of delivering the floating vessel under a long-term charter contract signed in April 2024.
New key piece in Poland’s energy strategy
The FSRU of Gdańsk is integrated as a strategic link within the concept known as the “Northern Gateway“. This vision of energy security also includes the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and the Baltic Pipe pipeline, which connects Poland with Norwegian reserves.
The project responds to the growing demand for gas in Central and Eastern Europe and strengthens Poland’s position as a redistribution hub in the region. The backing of the European Union, which included this infrastructure among its Projects of Common Interest, underlines its regional relevance.
Energy transition and regional logistics
The development of this terminal, in addition to expanding the country’s regasification capacity, will also create a key logistical foothold in the Baltic. The facility complements other initiatives such as the Gardeja-Kolnik gas pipeline, onshore work on which is progressing in parallel.
This boost in gas infrastructure is part of efforts to reduce dependence on non-diversified energy sources. With this project, Poland is strengthening its role as a pivot for security of supply in the Central European region.
