First “Floating Wind Innovation Center” (FLOWIC) opens in Scotland

With the opening of the first National Floating Wind Innovation Center (FLOWIC) in Aberdeen, Scotland. This initiative, led by ORE Catapult in collaboration with ETZ Limited, has an investment of GBP 9 million and stands as a crucial catalyst for technological progress in this field, backed by financial support from both the Scottish Government and Innovate UK.

This center was designed to drive advances in floating offshore wind technology in the UK, housing a range of cutting-edge innovations and equipment aimed at accelerating the commercialization of this sustainable form of energy.

Among them are a “dynamic flexible cable fatigue” equipmentprovided by Osbitwhich allows comprehensive testing of submarine cable strength and reliability, as well as a large-scale anchor test bench Y an offshore motion simulator to perform dynamic testing of structures and electrical connections in a simulated environment.

Andrew Jamieson, CEO of ORE Catapult highlighted the strategic importance of this facility in the context of the transition to a zero net emissions economy. He highlighted the opportunity to lead the global market for floating wind technology, with projections indicating significant market value in the coming years, particularly in the UK. Jamieson emphasized the need for UK and Scottish companies to be at the forefront of this growing sector, taking advantage of the economic and employment opportunities it offers.
