In Innisfail, Alberta, Deep Sky, a leader in carbon removal projects in Canada, has announced the construction of Deep Sky Labs, the first carbon capture center, dedicated to the innovation and commercialization of CO₂ removal technologies.. This project marks a significant breakthrough as the first private, commercial-scale direct air capture (DAC) facility in Canada, and a crucial step in the fight against climate change.
First carbon capture center with 10 technologies
Strategically located one hour north of Calgary, Deep Sky Labs will leverage its proximity to other green initiatives, such as a solar farm and a waste-to-energy plant, to form a new clean energy hub. With the capacity to capture up to 3,000 tons of CO2 per year, the center will also be designed to expand and test up to ten different carbon capture technologies. carbon capture technologies.
The facility, which will be supported by BBA, a leading engineering firm, will begin construction in the coming months and is expected to be operational this winter. It will also enable the company’s CO₂ elimination technologies removal technologies to be validated and optimized in the harsh Canadian climate prior to full-scale deployment.
The initial eight technologies, which include innovations from companies such as Airhive, Avnos, and Phlair, will have access to renewable energy and will be evaluated through a full life-cycle analysis to ensure the integrity of the carbon credits generated.
Job creation and decarbonization at Innisfail
Deep Sky Labs will create green jobs in Innisfail, with 80 workers needed for construction and 15 for annual operations, and also projects to generate an economic impact of more than $110 million in the region over the next 10 years.
The mayor of Innisfail, Jean Barclay, highlighted the importance of this project for the local community, stating that
Deep Sky’s selection of Innisfail demonstrates our readiness to respond to the demands of today’s business environment and our forward-looking vision for industrial development.
Deep Sky continues to advance its mission to support companies in their decarbonization commitments by offering high-integrity carbon credits validated under the strictest standards. Deep Sky Labs is just the first step in a broader strategy to scale carbon removal technologies across Canada, with the goal of creating a positive impact on both the economy and the environment.
