Hexagon’ s Manufacturing Intelligence division has unveiled the first 3D scanner with optical zoom, the SmartScan VR800. This feature allows users to customize the resolution of the data and thescope of the measurement volume.

This allows an analysis of the actual field to the software in real time, optimizing efficiency in quality inspection and perfecting work processes, reducing corrective alignment time after each analysis and scan.

It introduces unprecedented versatility by allowing users to define precisely how they want to scan the selected area. This is made possible by the use of dual cameras and an optical zoom projection capability.

In addition, three innovative software functions have been developed: Intelligent Resolution, Intelligent Zoom and Intelligent Snap, which allow the inspection resolution and measurement volume to be adjusted without the need for mechanical intervention on the instrument. Thus, it is possible to focus high-resolution scans on areas requiring greater detail and simultaneously address other areas more efficiently.

Pirmin Bitzi, general manager of portable metrology devices at Hexagon, underlines the importance of this innovation. According to Bitzi, the limitation of having to change optical components to suit different applications has been a significant obstacle in the implementation of structured light scanning inspection solutions. The creation of the VR800 begins to offer a solution that adapts to multiple applications without compromising scan quality at any resolution.

Agile and versatile for scanning surfaces

One of the most outstanding features of the VR800 is its unique configuration of four 20 MP cameras in dual stereo, far outperforming other structured light scanners available on the market, which generally use two cameras of lower resolution.

This configuration, in combination with a projection unit with optical zoom, allows the measurement of larger volumes and the variation of resolution within these volumes. In addition, a controller unit integrated into the system ensures fast and efficient preprocessing of the scanned data, facilitating subsequent handling.

The VR800’s Smart Snap functionality represents a significant advance in workflow efficiency, especially on parts that require high-resolution scanning throughout. This mode employs the camera pair with the wider base to capture an alignment image using LED flash, while the camera pair with the smaller base performs a full high-resolution 3D scan.
